About North Whidbey SC’s Travel/Select Program
Deception FC offers a higher and more advanced level of commitment, training, and competitive play for players in Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island, Fidalgo Island, and other areas of Western Washington. We serve players from U9 to U19.
DFC teams emphasize improving individual skills and incorporating them into team-based environments. This program is an excellent way to build character and form lasting friendships. We are proud to play in the North Puget Sound League and compete against RCL and WPL teams at sanctioned tournaments throughout the year.
Our player pathway includes our three active programs so that everyone can have an opportunity to embrace the game at a level that suits them.
With DFC Juniors, our youngest players can try competitive soccer to see if they like it. With new academy programming and practice player dynamics, we can provide more opportunities for everyone.
FAQs About Deception Football Club
What are Deception FC Tryouts?
Every soccer club that plays in a competitive league hosts tryouts at the beginning of every season. Tryouts are a process ran by North Whidbey Soccer Club to ensure that every player wanting and interested in playing select soccer are identified and coaches and directors can provide appropriate placement of players onto teams that will help accelerate and benefit their development.
Our mission at North Whidbey Soccer Club is to provide high level support to players that will facilitate the technical, tactical and mental development of all players. By placing players onto teams during tryouts, this ensures players are in an environment suitable to support their growth. Washington Youth Soccer mandates the tryout dates and schedule.
What can I expect at DFC Tryouts?
To participate in DFC tryouts, players must register online by the published date each year. We will accept walk-ons if you miss this deadline and there are available trialist openings. Each age group hosts two tryouts, and we encourage you to make both!
High school boys typically host their DFC tryouts in February. All other players have their primary tryouts in May. Supplemental tryout opportunities may be offered periodically throughout the year.
Plan to arrive 30 minutes before the tryout starts, and you will need to bring confirmation and check in on the upper fields at Ft. Nugent. Also bring water and appropriate clothing, shin guards are mandatory. All players are to wear non-branded playing clothes, and they should not wear a uniform from a previous season from any club.
Players will be given a pinnie with a number. This identification is how Deception FC coaches track you throughout the process, and you will wear the same number on both days.
Each age group’s head coaches will introduce themselves to the group and club trainers will then deliver tryouts while the head coaches evaluate.
Following tryouts, the coaches will meet and place players onto teams, the number of teams depend on the number of players available to each age group. Players will get a phone call or email offering a spot on a team, and jersey numbers will be posted on our results page. Players will have 24 hours to accept a spot or be offered a number of different programs our club has to offer.
What Does a Deception FC Season Look Like?
A typical competitive season with Deception FC starts around June 1st for most teams. Our high school boys teams begin training once varsity and JV programs release the players. We offer training 2-3 times a week, depending on the coach.
Tournaments are played during the summer prior to the season starting. Individual teams determine how many & in which tournaments to compete (typically 3-5 tournaments which are covered by the select fee). Our teams play their select season in the North Puget Sound League (NPSL) and those games begin in September & continue through half of December.
U14 and under teams also participate in the NPSL Development League in February to April, so they are playing a good portion of the year. Traveling throughout the region is required, as half the games are played at Fort Nugent Park, while the remaining games are played away.
What is the Financial Commitment for Select?
Team sizes are based on the number of players that try out & commit to the season. 2024 rates are approximately $1,050 per player, with scholarship opportunities available to cut down the costs for those who qualify.
Considering the average commitment before travel and lodging expenses is approximately $3,000 per player in Washington State, we offer players on Whidbey Island an opportunity to gain exposure while keeping tuition costs as affordable as possible.
